The Impossible, a film which open our eyes.

Yesterday I watched on TV one of the most chocking and emotional movie I have ever seen. It is called "The Impossible" and it tells the story about how a Spanish family survived to the tsunami of Thailand. Watching this film I have changed a little my mind. We should to be pleased of eating every day and having a house where we sleep and also of having next to us the ones that we love. Lots of people from all over the world are not as fortunate as we are.

Human has been always taking care about material things instead of the ones next to him. Families are separated by heritages or men from all periods of the history could make a war for feeling powerful, for example. We are able to loose people who we love or admired because we prefer having money and power. Selfishness has always existed and it could be the worst side of people.

Thanks to this devastating situations or movies like “The Impossible”, we could open our eyes. I had heard about catastrophe when it happened in 2004. Then I was eight years old so what really occurred was unimaginable for a little girl. But yesterday, watching the movie and the real images I was shocked. People drowning, houses and hotels being rolled, hospitals collapsed… it must have been horrible.

Therefore, we should look after the ones we care: our family, friends, partners… We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. We must apply the famous quote “carpe diem”, which means “live this day as it were the last”.

Advertising

Nowadays, we are used to watching lots of advertisements at every place we go. We can find them on TV, books, magazines, social networks, radio and also on bus background. That’s because capitalism is getting bigger and bigger so we are exposed to such marketing strategy. However, some people is against of that since they think that advertising tries to manipulate our mind.

Personally, I am not against advertising if it is used in a right way, although not always it is. Advertising experts know how to make their product attractive to consumers. Last year, in my psychologist class at high school I learnt some advertising strategies. From there, now I know that, for instance, they use different colours or a catching jingle depending on the effect that they can make or a powerful slogan to catch public’s attention. This means that they can get into users’ subconscious “obligating” them to desire something that they don’t really need.

Advertising has been focused specially to child and young people. This sectors haven’t got the same personality as adults have so there are more possibilities for them to be manipulated. For example, on Christmas time around 80% of advertisement are offering toys or videogames with lots of special effects such as Wii’s announcement. Another successful advertisement is for selling Coca-Cola, one of the most powerful business all over the world. Everyone from all ages, particularly young people, has ever drunk coke. In the same way happens with adverts for mobile phones.

I understand that the different industries has to offer their products, but they must do it respectfully. Consumers are free to decide what product or service they need (or desire) and what don’t want at all. People don’t like the feeling of being manipulated, so maybe government has to control advertising. Is supposed that we live in a Free State, so we have to be free also deciding in what we are spending our money.

Unusual things that I like.

I love watching films or TV programs in original version, not dubbed, which is not something usual in my country. In my opinion, not many people know the benefits of doing this. The original version can helps us to learn a different language and to get a better pronunciation and vocabulary. For instance, this is a little step to get a job since they usually ask us to know a second language. Not dubbed shows sometimes can be funny because of you can now in this way the real actors' voices. However, people don't usually watch original version TV programmes or series because sometimes the just want to enjoy the movie, not learn a language. I understand this position, but if they knew the other language, they would do both things at the same time. In other countries, they usually do that so I imagine that that's why most of them speak English fluently. To conclude, doing something unusual many times can be better for yourself.

Problem/Solution paragraph - Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is an important nowadays problem, which is getting worse progressively. It is considered as a chronic disease and it also affects adult people. The focus of this problem has been attributed to many different factors, such as genetic, life style or  nervous and endocrine system behaviour. But specially, has been blamed food education. Today's childs and young people don't usually have healthy meals as vegetables or leguminous, which are necessary in our diary diet. In stead of that, they are used to eating fast food, pasta, meat, chocolate.... Maybe this fact is not their fault: their parents are blamed. They must had given them a good food education since they were little avoiding problems like this.

In order to overcome these problems our society must change their mind and think about their and their child's healthy. As I said before, a good food education is probably the answer to aboid this problem, but if the problem comes from genetic heritage, we will have to think about other solutions. Today there are lots of  medical interventions as surgery. But I think that the best solution is doing sport and having a healthy diet everyday.
